Help with choosing connectors
help with choosing
The connector is the component that completes the chain by linking two elements of the PPE system together (harness, lanyard, lifeline, anchor point).
Screw-lock carabiners, auto-locking carabiners, wide-opening hooks… each type is designed for a specific use in accordance with its relevant standard, and a simple error in selection can compromise the entire connection. Choosing the right connector therefore depends on the required strength (measured in kN), the locking mechanism appropriate to the level of risk, and the type of opening, which must match the component to which it is attached (ring, rail, tubular structure, etc.).
This guide to connectors will provide you with everything you need to choose the right connector for your working situation
The EN 362 standard
Connectors are mainly used to link different components (e.g. harnesses/lanyards), but they can also be used as anchor points. In all cases, they must be used along their long axis, and in only one direction at a time. They must be locked (either with a screw or automatically) whilst in use and must not be used whilst resting against an external surface.
The connector is an essential linking component in a fall arrest system. It is vital to fully understand the different uses associated with each class of connector:
Which one should you choose?
Once you have chosen the connector class, you should also consider the locking mechanism:
Screw lock: intended for occasional use.
Automatic lock: intended for frequent use. At KRATOS SAFETY, our connectors are colour-coded as follows:
Other selection criteria
Shape:
Oval: must be used with equipment that has two points of contact on the connector (e.g. flanged pulley)
Asymmetrical: should be used as a priority as it ensures correct positioning between the two connected components;
Large size: to be used for connecting to metal structures or large components;
Quick-release link: to be used when a virtually permanent connection between two components is required.
Material:
Steel: suitable for harsh conditions; these should primarily be used for connections to metal structures
Aluminium: to be preferred when weight is a key consideration for the task at hand (e.g. rescue operations).
Opening:
Connector with an opening < 30 mm: mainly used as a connecting element
Connector with an opening > 30 mm: mainly used as an anchoring element on a structure. Strength must also be taken into account when making a choice.
All KRATOS SAFETY steel connectors are supplied with an electro-deposited zinc anti-corrosion coating, which guarantees excellent corrosion resistance.
