Help with choosing energy absorbers and lanyards with energy absorbers
Selection guide
The energy absorber is the component of the PPE system that, in the event of a fall, dissipates the forces transmitted to the body, either by tearing a folded webbing strap or by paying out a cable. Even the most ordinary fall factor can generate several kilonewtons on the body in its absence. Choosing the right absorber therefore depends on the connection length required, the fall clearance available below the anchor point, and the type of activity, whether stationary work on a pole, movement along a lifeline, work in a confined space, etc.
Brief reminder about the standard
EN 355:
Energy-absorbing lanyards make it possible to dissipate the energy of the fall by tearing a webbing strap or a specific seam. The maximum length is 2 metres, connectors included. Breaking strength > 15 kN. A lanyard without an energy absorber must not be used as a fall arrest system.
What to choose?
Whatever the type of lanyard or energy dissipator, it is above all a personal choice, which must nevertheless be made according to the intensity of use.
Fall indicator label
Before each use, check your energy-absorbing lanyard.
If the "NOT OK" box is visible on the label, it means your device has arrested a fall and must therefore not be reused. Please replace it with compliant equipment.
